Best antivirus available?

Hi People,

I would like to ask you guys what's the best anti virus available. I'm
currently using Norton Antivirus 2003 but it always freezes my computer and
screws up my downloads at the P2P networks.
Is there something else that I could try to protect my PC without ruining
with my machine's performance?

There are a few good ones out there and it is hard to say which one is the
best. Two that I know of are Kaspersky and NOD32. For over all protection
again viruses, Trojans and malware I would choose Kaspersky. Just my
opinion. Good Luck.

I agree that Kaspersky is very good, but I've never had a problem with
NOD32 detection either. John also expressed an interest in something
that wouldn't degrade system performance. In this sense, I would
still recommend NOD32 over Kaspersky. Compared to NOD32, Kaspersky's
resource usage and slower speed can still seem a bit cumbersome.

I run NOD32 along with BOClean, and both together are less noticeable
on system resources than KAV by itself.

Do you actually see a system slow down with Kaspersky Real Time
Protection? I will grant that Nod32 runs on-demand scans faster, but
that should be needed only occasionally if you use the Real Time
Protection.

I know I sure did. I might still have a screencap movie somewhere showing
the difference. For example, opening up add/remove programs took several
times longer with KAV activated than without it. Even if doing it back and
forth multiple time to remove caching from the equation.

I first noticed it when the start menu became very slow quite often. Sorta
like it acts the first time you navigate it after being in a memory
intensive application for some time, having caused Windows to page out
pretty much everything it can find.

It took me a while to figure out the culprit. I don't think I've ever tried
any other AV software that actually had a noticeable impact on my system's
performance during everyday use. Well, not counting AVK which also uses the
KAV engine.

Of course, YMMV. I'd recommend anybody considering KAV to grab their trial
version and make up their own minds.

At the time I was testing both KAV and NOD32 side by side, it was on
an old and not very powerful machine (WinME, with only 256 MB RAM and
a very slow Celeron CPU). KAV version was 3.5 at the time, and the
difference between KAV and NOD32 resource usage was very obvious.
Even on that old, slow machine, NOD32 ran very transparently. Not so
with KAV.

I now have a much faster, more powerful machine, and I'm still using
NOD32. In all fairness, since I've been so happy with NOD32 all
these years, I've not felt the need to re-test KAV on this different
machine. Kaspersky may well have improved KAV performance since
then, but I still see people commenting on its resource usage; even
on their newer, faster machines.

I'm running Kav 5.0 and don't see any slow-down. No question that
NOD32 scans faster.

I still have a NOD32 license, at least for another 12 days. I might
look at a comparison of the two from a pure memory usage aspect. Even
though Kav has a slightly better detection record, admittedly, I never
contracted any viruses while running NOD.
