Best All-in-1 for Vista?

T

Tejer

Would anyone happen to be able to recommend an all in one antivirus,
firewall, etc. that works with Vista well and doesnt have problems on the OS
and also runs without using a lot of memory? I have Norton 360 v2 and Iolo
System Mechanic 7 Pro, and i'm stuck on which or if either should be used on
Vista? Any suggestions?

For home use, there are many free anti-virus: AntiVir Personal, Avast
Home, AVG, ... And there is at least one free firewall called Comodo,
again for home use.

If you want a secure system, use the programs below.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Above is the link for Norton Removal Tool; if using Norton.

Vista’s Firewall is very good!

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Above is a link to Avast Free 4 Home Anti-Virus
It is low resource using, free and Vista 32bit and 64bit compatible.
Only have one (1) anti-virus installed; more than 1 can cause conflicts.

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

For Spyware removal, use the above link to “Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5.2â€
Download it, install it, update it, immunize your system and scan your
System with it.

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/

For a non-scanning, but running in the background, Program to STOP Spyware
being downloaded to your Computer, use SpywareBlaster 4, available at the
above link.

I know this is not really what you wanted to hear, but I think it has to be
mentioned. All-in-one security solutions are not the optimal way to handle
malware, rather you should pick good products in each category and compile
your own "suite" fitted to your needs. Security suites like Norton tend to
be bloated, bundled software, hogging system resources and including
functions you probably do not need.

The basics you have to have are a patched up OS, an anti-virus, an
additional anti-spyware scanner (you already have Windows Defender) and a
firewall (Vista's built inn fw will suffice for most home users). Enable
your router firewall if you have one, it makes an excellent first line of
defense.

Be careful about using registry cleaners. Performance improvement is hardly
noticeable, but the damage potential is rather impressive. If you are not a
pro, I suggest you do not use one altogether.

They both should work. Norton 360 is on Sony PC's with Vista so you know
it's compatible. But when the 60 day trial runs out a lot of people install
another virus and firewall and this is what causes problems.

You don't know if these progs are compatible. Even a big company like
ZoneAlarm took a while to come out with a Vista version. Only fools worry
about if something is free. Don't spend money on an OS or PC and then put
some free junk on it. Avast is very good but I think he should stay with
Norton and Vista.

Don't put any of that junk on a Vista computer! Although I use Avast I would
suggest you stay with Norton for virus/firewall.

No harm giving them a try. I see no reason not to use
the best in each product category. Integration? Unless
you wanna write programs....

I don't like all in ones.
Depending on the machine, I use AVG (http://free.grisoft.com) Avast
(www.avast.com) or Cklamwin (www.clamwin.com) for AV.
I allow Defender to run, but I also use Spybot Search & Destroy
(http://www.majorgeeks.com) as my second anto-spyware program.
I have yet to see the benefit of a software fiirewall. My home network is
behind a NAT enabled router and my LAN has a hardware firewall.
I only have 14 machines at home and 250 at work, so someone with more
experience may tell you different.

Software firewall is just annoying. Besides, you have a hardware firewall.

Frankly I don't recommend any all-in-one product. Get a good antivirus
product and use the existing firewall and malware protection that Vista
contains. That's it!

Yes if most bloat is your definition of best, then yes.

Otherwise, Norton sucks even more than Vista.

No thanks. I wouldn't use a Symantec Product even if I was forced to.

I don't use or recommend all in one security suites. I use NOD32 anti-virus,
the built in Vista firewall, and Windows Defender. If you want to run
another anti-spyware program Superantispyware is good. I wouldn't run it
with real time protection. Just use it as an on demand scanner.

Two points:

1. I am very much against the idea of such suites of programs, whether they
are security suites or any other kind. I believe in choosing what I believe
to be the best products in each category, regardless of what some particular
vendor has bundled together.

2. I know very little about System Mechanic, but in my view, Norton makes
the *worst* security software, and anything Norton would be my last choice.

I recommend the following, all free:

The Vista firewall

Avast! anti-virus

At least two or three of the following anti-spyware products

Adaware
Spybot Search & Destroy
Spyware Blaster
Windows Defender
Super Antispyware
asquared.

Is your head placed firmly where the Sun doesn't shine? Norton is terrible
and a bloated hog that screws up systems. Stay away. Far Far away from
Norton. Use Avast instead.
