Beeping mouse, eventual freeze

My mouse seems to work fine in the first minutes after I start my computer, but eventually the cpu starts to beep (one beep) and the mouse freezes for an instant. The computer is still functional. This begins very sporadically, but eventually becomes more frequent, until the computer freezes completely. any ideas?

Check fan operation although single beep usually indicates keyboard error
check that connection

strangely enough, I bought a usb (rather than seriel) mouse and extension usb cord (config of computer on desk needs long cable) and things are working fine now. I think maybe the cable was bad (probably not mouse, mouse is new, but seriel cable, which was about 2 years old) or had been constricted between desk and other furniture? Is this possible? Will route mouse cable another way just in case?
