BDC User Copying

Guest

Hello,
I have not setup a BDC yet and am wondering what the purpose of one is.
What I want to do is format my PDC, expand partitions, and then bring it back
up. I don't mind joining all of the members back to the PDC through a scipt,
but what about the users? Is it possible to: Create a BDC. Copy SID's of
Users from PDC to BDC, Format PDC, Reinstall everything, then copy back users
from BDC to PDC? I am running Server 2003 and would also run this on the BDC.
Any help would be awsome!

Thank you

Windows Server 2003 does not support "PDC" and "BDC" roles - all servers are
members of the Active Directory structure. But yes, if you bring up a new
AD server, then demote the old server, then reinstall Windows, then re-join
the 'new' server to the domain, and finally promote the server to an AD
server you will preserve all the security data present.

You could also use Symantec Ghost to create an Image of the drive. Replace
the Drive, then reapply the image to it. If handled properly your old drive
would still be intact sitting on a shelf in case something went wrong and
you had to go back to it.
