Hi,

While trying to install battlefield 1942 on Windows xp Pro the installation was halted when changing from disk 1 to 2.
The message I got had to do with a "componet could not be found in the named media". The installation just cancelled itself. Went thru the trouble shooting (permissions, installshield update, tried 2nd cdrom drive, update drivers, cleaned CDs, swore at my old rig..then recanted) The game worked fine on win98se. Also installed Call of duty on xp pro with no problems at all (also got the safedisc patch and all appropriate updates from the mothership....Microsoft... Checked out a lot of web sites only found a few folks with same issue...and no replies to their questions. Wondered if anyone has encounted the same problem....

Cheers! And Thanks

Hi Karlowski,

You've tried some of these already, however this is what I usually
recommend for people in the same situation as you're in. Good luck! :)

That type of error usually indicates corrupt media... Check the CD
and the CD Player. Clean both using a Cleaning Kit, and check for
scratches on the CD. Try installing the game on another computer,
if the game installs, the culprit is probably your CD ROM drive if it
doesn't install then it's the CD, in which case you need to replace it.

Before replacing the CD, try copying it to your hard drive and then
run the setup / installation program from there. To copy the CD go
to My Computer, Right-Click the CD, Choose "Copy", then Right-
Click on your Hard Drive, Choose "Paste".

Here are three basic troubleshooting steps which I recommend:

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de to find any
Trojans, Adware, or Spyware which could clog up your system.

3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

If nothing including those 3 steps have resolved the problem so far,
here's more basic troubleshooting steps and information including:
The Safedisc patch
How to check CD for imperfections, and
How to Disable Virtual CD rom drives which is described at:

Thanks so much for your help. I have read your other posts as well. It's great to have somebody who knows everything!!
As luck would have it I was able to install battlefield 1942 after I cleaned the registry. Since the install was aborted halfway thru perhaps some junk was left behind. Also I found that I have 2 copies of Disk #2 (I tried both earlier but had the same problem). At any rate there are so many variables it takes a great deal of patience to sort it all out...I think this makes it so much fun too!!

Your assistance is appreciated!

I actually get all EA games at the employee store in Foster City. All patches and advice are usually given to me while onsite with detailed instruction. One of the most important things you can do to ensure a smooth install "that works" is to defrag before every game install and try to do scheduled defrags to keep your canvas clean. I have been told it is also good practice for PC gamers to install the games on the non OS drive if you have one. Typically I never install games on the C drive if thats my OS. In a case where you have RAID it depends on your config. Good luck and remember chkdisk, and defrag are money!
