Basic Firewall Question?

Kagsy

Dear All,

I am confused. I am trying to visit symantec's web page on
a pc that has Norton's Internet Security. My ie (ver 6)
won't detect the page as if I have no connection. I have
broadband and since it is always on, this should not be a
problem. I have been able to visit any page other than
www.symantec.com.

Symantec are unwilling to help since the version of NIS is
2 years old. This causes problems with the software live
update because it can't find the site to update it.

Please help.

See if you are also blocked at www.mcafee.com So viruses
block access to sites so you can't get anti-virus updates.
You can download STINGER on another computer and put it on a
floppy (or other medium) and run it on the infected
computer. It will detect and remove about 40 different
viruses and their variations. It is a stand alone tool, not
a full anti-virus program. http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

You need to buy an anti-virus or get a free version from
GriSoft AVG is free but doesn't update as often as McAfee.
I use McAfee and am very happy with it. They update at
least once a week on Wednesday but often have several
updates when conditions require it.

I have used McAfee since it was just a shareware program, and to date have
never been troubled by virus infestation.. I have, however, seen more than a
few Norton protected systems suffer.. I still do not understand why Norton
is so popular..

Hello Mike & Jim
I also wonder why Norton is so popular, I have also had McAfee for years and
have heard of infections with Norton.
Maybe someone running Norton can shed some light on this for me.

I have had problems with both of those programs. Both
eventually bombed so badly I could not go to a secure site
with Norton and McAfee made a mess with my OS, XP. I have
gone on to PC-cillin and am very happy with it.

They seem to have a higher advertising budget.

I can't even figure out how to even contact cheap-assed
tough-to-get-tech-support Symantec - did you do it email?

Anyway - so you are paying the yearly subscription to updates, and
they won't help you?

If you really want to stick with Symantec, then if you look every week
at sales in big electronic & computer stores, and maybe online too,
you can find an upgrade with double rebates - I paid about $15 for
Norton SystemWorks 2004 (has anti-virus plus other tools that do come
in handy) after 2 rebates - one for having a previous version and one
for buying it at that particular store. Plus it came with a separate
free box glued to the side with Norton Personal Firewall, which is
like Norton Internet Security..

They don't get you so much with the buying of the software new, it is
the yearly charges for updates or upgrading every year with a newer
version (which gives you a free year of updates).

Well, this ain't either of those two, but one who is locked into
Norton/Symantec. If I had known way-back-when about Symantec's
horrendous tech help policies, I would have never started with them.

OK, that said - I do have Norton SystemWorks 2004, Norton Personal
Firewall, and Norton Ghost. Norton SystemWorks has anti-virus in it,
plus several other useful tools - the Password Manager is just great -
99% of the time it fills in info for me in the appropriate slots.

All 3 seem to run very well on my 2.2 GHz Athalon on Comcast, net.
Every time I check for updates, at least once a week, there are always
some kind of an update for me (usually anti-virus, but other updates
too.)

The Personal Firewall seems to work well - it is always detecting an
intrusion attempt - I had to tell it not to inform me if a similar
attack happened.

Also, yesterday in Usenet I downloaded an attachment, and Norton came
up and said there was a virus in it and deleted it. (1st time I've
seen that - I can't remember if I did try to launch it or not or maybe
save it to my hard drive without trying to launch it).

I don't know if I am more vulnerable to a virus/worm attack than if I
was with someone else. Like I said, I get updates all of the time. I
have not caught anything yet. But I haven't been with them that long
either.
