Barton XP2500+ v AMD 64 3700

Am currently using the AMD XP2500+ and thinking of upgrading to the 64
series.

Being a newbie, will there be a noticeable increase in performance
please?

If you're just surfing and using office apps, the Barton is plenty of power.

If you have a cpu dependent game that's too slow or some task that's topping
out your cpu then the 3700+ will help alot.

Especially with lots of memory.

Should have said - this is not for gaming but for video editing and
conversions. Also the memory at present is 1gb.

3700 San Diego will make a noticable difference in video editing.
Suggest using 2gb of memory and a large fast hard drive.

You may not find much difference between an San Diego 3700 and an
Opteron 144 except the extra $50 you save by getting the Opteron. The
extra clock speed of the 3700 does not translate into much of a
processing difference. And the Opteron can easily overclock to the same
speed or more than the 3700.
