bad file associations and/or web browser problems

I am having significant trouble with my web browsers (both firefox and IE6)
viewing certain pages (specifically certain graphics or pictures on sites,
usually .gif).

I loaded ACDSee onto my system to manage my photos and it made itself the
default viewer for almost every type of media file, which was the problem at
first. I unselected the various file types for which I would not need ACDSee
and it cleared up the problem. However, I later did a system restore to an
earlier point, reloaded ACDSee, apparently did something else to my system,
and now, no matter what I do, to include uninstalling ACDSee, using a system
restore again, etc, I cannot seemt to get my web browsers to behave.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

p.s., I have isolated it to my system and not connectivity issues because I
also have a laptop connected to the same router/switch without any issues
whatsoever.
