jpg association loss | unable to get it back | after wmf patch

Since the wmf patch was installed on my machine, I can no longer double click
on a jpg image to launch ACDSee 7. I am no longer able to use the 'open
as...' function because it has disappeared. If I click 'Open' and choose the
ACDSee exe file; select 'always use this program with this file type' - the
associations fail to take place.

Furthermore, I've gone into the registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
when I select .jpg to explore the values I get 'Cannot open .jpg. Error
while opening key.'

Although I'm an admin, it tells me I don't have the right permissions to
edit that key.

I've re-run ACDSee 7 setup to repair association, but because the
permissions in the registry are not mine, that fails too.

I know it's the patch that's caused this. I used system restore to go back
just prior to installing the patch. Registry all fine and file associations
back to normal.

As soon as the patch is re-applied, I'm back to square one.

In addition, I've double checked for viruses using AVG and Symantec on-line.
Nothing found.

Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Maybe the following suggestions will be useful.

First...try this, maybe it will restore the option:

go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

A dialog box should report the following:

"DllRegisterServer in SHIMGVW.DLL succeeded"

Next...read the info at the following link:

Repair image file type associations in Windows XP
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/imgassofix.htm

Once you defaults are back to normal you
should be able to re-associate your images
with the program you choose.

Error "Cannot open .jpg. Error while opening key" indicates a Permission
problem. Right-click the key, and choose Permissions. Make sure that
"Administrators" group and the SYSTEM account have Full Control over the
key, and Users have "Read" Permissions.

John & Ramesh, Thank you.

I tried both your suggestions and I have my jpg associations back with a
good registry.

I registered the dll file first as detailed in John's post:
===

(without the quotes)(Yes, there's

The imagefix program did not work however because my registry was still
locked.

With some difficulty I battled against the windows operating system to
change the permission of the jpg key. I also had to alter a few other keys
associated with jpg files as they were locked too. The keys were jpeg and
jfif.

If you have the same problem, I suggest clicking on each key in turn to see
if it is locked. All keys must be unlocked in order to restore these
associations.

Once again, many thanks.

The wmf patch was the official release by Microsoft via Windows Update.

I have never attempted the un-official patch by Ilfak Guilfanov.
