Backup

I try to backup and write my files out to DVD. I receive this message: "An
error accored. The following information might help you resolve the error:
Access is denied 0x80070005". Has anybody else had this experience?

FYI, I get a somewhat different error, but Backup is still not working well
for me. In my latest attempt to instigate "Back up files" from the Backup
and Restore Center, this is what happened: I used a fresh DVD and started
it. It ran for at least three hours, alternately copying files and writing
them to the DVD (the DVD drive spinning up and down regularly to receive the
files). During this time, green bar in the progress window never got further
than about 40% of the distance. And after all this, an error message
appeared:
"The backup did not complete successfully"
"An error occurred. The following information might help you resolve the
error:"
"The system cannot find the path specified. (0x80070003)"

The size of the files on this DVD was approximately 2.25 GB, a lot less than
what I added up from the 12 CD's that I put the first Backup attempt on last
week (12 * .70GB = about 8.4 GB. This is frustrating trying to use an
advertised feature of Vista and it does not seem to work properly.

I am also using a tool called SyncToy to make a selective folder by folder
backup of my working files.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium. When I start backup this is what
happens:
1. Changebackup settings. Create a new, full backupin addition to change
settings.

2. Save setting and start backup.

3. Label and insert a blank disk. "name of PC 6/25/07 8:37 AM Disk 1".

4. Disk in Drive is a previous backup disk. (This is the disk I tried to
use in the previous try.)

5. Inserted new DVD.

6. Scanning files to backup.

7. An error occured. The following information might help to resolve the
error. Access is denied 0x80070005.

This does the same everytime I try to do backup.

Sorry I'm not helping, but, the same thing happens to me. I am using Vista
Home Premium 32-bit Edition on a Notebook PC. I have tried to backup to the
Internal CD/DVD Writer and to the External Writer. Neither works! I get about
15 minutes into the backup and receive the "Access is denied. 0x80070005"
message. I believe this started happening after I performed a Complete System
Recovery from the Recovery Partition. I have a backup from the first day I
used the Notebook in March. So, it worked then. But, after the CSR things
have been strange. Roxio EMC9S wouldn't install correctly. I can't perform
backups, except for with Sonic BackUp My PC 7.1.0 that was part of Roxio
EMC9S. When I left-click on some Video links in IE7, I recieve an error
message. I have to right-click and Save Target As.

I have tried to use CD-Rs, DVD+R DLs, and DVD+Rs. Neither work. I have the
first Vista Service Pack installed, I believe. Vista is up-to-date. Firmware
and drivers for the CD/DVD Writers are up-to-date. I have performed
Chkdsk/Scandisk to check for errors in the file system and for Hard Drive
errors. Nothing was found. I have run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter.
What else can I do?

None of the Windows "Backup" systems have ever worked reliably, this
goes back to Windows 3.1.

If you don't mind making backups that fail when you try to restore them
that's fine, but nothing more that a false sense of security.

You need to invest in a real backup / cloning system like Acronis True
Image, which can clone an entire disk and do incremental backups. Make
on clone just after a fresh install of Windows and all your necessary
drivers etc and that will take care of any possible system failures that
leave you with nothing at all.

There are other systems, Norton make one but I wouldn't recommend any
Symantec product to my worst enemy, and I've used one by 7tools but
Acronis seems the best. To get this job done reliably you are going to
have to buy something I think...

At this point, I have abandoned using DVD disks for my automatic backups in
Vista. I purchased an external 160GB USB hard disk for $60. It works
great: no messing with disks or incomplete backups or disk related errors,
etc. Best $60 I have spent.

I have found that you must disable Roxio's DRAG TO DISC for the drive you are
backing up TO in order to successfully complete a Microsoft Backup. I found
that tip of the Roxio/Sonic Support site.
