back up windows mail to outlook express

I want to back up the emails and contacts from a Vista PC which needs
reformatting to a Win XP PC with Outlook Express. Can this be done? I've
tried exporting to an external HD and receive error messages.

First export to an empty folder under your profile:
C:\Users\you\...
Then copy from there to your external media.
You may get a warning about losing some file properties.
Just ignore that.
