avi movie files won't play in PP since upgrading from 2000 to XP

I've recently upgraded to XP. Certain avi files no longer play in a
Powerpoint presentation I created when running on Windows 2000. However,
they do play in Media Player when I click on them in Explorer. I've tried
re-inserting the files but it doesn't make any difference. I've got
PowerPoint 2003.

Thanks for your suggestions Sandy. I've installed the updates and tried the
suggestions in the link you sent, but to no avail. I think the problem might
lie with the avi files themselves. The avi files in my presentation which
are actually films work fine. The ones I'm having trouble with contain
simulations created in 'Solid Works', but they're still avi files and they
used to work fine until I did the upgrade to XP. All I get at the moment is
a picture of the first frame and no movement.

Chances are the "avi" files created by "solid works" are using some kind of
unique / uncommon 'codec'.

Your new PC needs that 'codec' to be able to play those avi files.

If you installed solid works on this PC then that might do the trick.

Follow the link to pfcmedia that Austin provided to read more on the
subject.
