AVI file as email attachment

A friend emailed me an .avi file. If I open the attachment from within
Outlook, Windows Media Player launches, but only plays the audio - no video.
If I save the file to my hard drive, then launch it, the video plays, as
it's supposed to. At first, I thought there must be something weird on my
PC, but my friend discovered, by emailing the file to himself, that it does
the same thing on his PC.

I've done some Googling, but can't find anything about this phenomenon.
Anyone have any good guesses?

Another tidbit of information; The same thing happens if I open the file
from webmail, so it's not a problem related to Outlook, per se. My friend
experiences the same thing opening the file from within Yahoo mail, too.
