The free version of AVG has a plug in for Outlook Express 5. How do I
upgrade it to OE 6?

How do I use AVG with any other email client?

I attempted to using the plug in for OE 5 with OE 6. When I press Alt+S
to send mail, it wipes out all the mail content and sends only its
certification stuff.

How do I fix it?

Don't use the Plug-in for OE5...it does not work with OE6. The OE5 Plug-in
is only meant to be used with OE5. To upgrade to OE6, you have to upgrade
to IE6.

Go here and download and install the IE6 SP1 Upgrade
http://tinyurl.com/eo50

Then go here and update the IE6 SP1 with the latest security patch.

I have IE6 and OE6. How do I tell AVG to scan emails with activating the
plugin?

Open AVG6, click Program on the Toolbar | AVG Control Center | E-Mail
Scanner. Check the boxes of the features you want activated. Then click on
the Advanced Settings tab under the OE5 Plug-in window. Here you see a box
next to 'Scan incoming mail', check it. Then click on the other tabs and
check the boxes for the features you want on each. You can modify the
message for your incoming and outgoing certification message as well on the
Certification tab. Forget the OE5 Plug-in, it is only meant to work with
OE5. The upgraded OE6 does not need it. I did the same thing after I
upgraded to OE6. Someone here on this ng kindly advised me.... "So...why do
you think it says OE5." ;-)

There is no upgrade for that plugin, which is supposed to work with OE5 and
all higher versions (such as OE6). I'm using the OE5 plugin and it works
fine with my OE6 on Windows XP Home(SP1). I've tested it and it catches
incoming email viruses, which is its main purpose.

If the Alt+S key sequence doesn't work for some strange reason, try the send
operation in the Tools menu or the toolbar icon.

I recommend leaving off the certification stuff.

I recall that I had some problems with the OE5 plugin when I was running
W98se/OE6.

Hmm, when I used AVG, I never had a problem using the plugin with OE6, both
under Win2k Pro and WinXP Pro. Just turn it on and away you go.

the OE5 plugin seems to work for me with OE6 on Wn98SE. I can say this
because it has caught viruses in incoming email attachments. Don't
knowe about the Alt+S problem though as I never use this.

Even this is not working as I observed lately.

Take a look at

http://www.grisoft.cz/beta/avgemc/avgemc_en.htm

You may find it a bit of a fag to set up and if you don't enjoy
solving riddles let me know and I will do what I can to help.

Even this didn't help. The problem is that when I press send button or
Alt+S, the whole message is selected and then cut off. When I look at
the message in outbox, I see only the blank message content. I have also
tested by sending from one of accounts to another but I received only a
blank mail.

I have to switch to back to avast! Since I am on low resources I thought
AVG might be of help.

Is it possible to have avast! for email scanning and AVG for rest of the
work? Would I be saving resources in doing so?

Glad to hear that it works for you. It caused nothing but problems for me,
and the IE/OE MVP's also advised against using it with OE6. So, I don't. My
AV catches all incoming infected e-mails without it, neutralizes them and
puts them in the Virus Vault for me to deal with as I choose. I am curious
as a cat, and I like that, as opposed to just deleting them for me outright
and then telling me that it found something and deleted it. That way I can
see what it was, and where it came from before deleting it.

Wow! I'm impressed! Never heard of one that can do that!

Curiosity killed the cat who believes her av catches _everything_ :)

Look at the message if you're curious and then delete the whole email
... attackment and all. Forget about scanning email for viruses. It's
unnecessary if you use a decent email app.

Can you not send e-mails properly without the OE5 plug-in on in OE6? If so,
then don't use the plug-in. You don't need to use the OE5 plug-in to catch
viruses with OE6. AVG6 catches them by your setting the features you want
to use for scanning in the E-mail Scanning tab. I have AVG6 and I don't use
the plug-in, and AVG nabs them just fine, neutralizes them and then puts
them in the AVG Virus Vault until I check them, then I delete them. Also,
check all the boxes on the Resident shield tab except for Disable Resident
shield. Most do not advise running two active AV's on the same system.
Or, get another program to scan your e-mails before they are downloaded from
the server, such as Mailwasher, or one of others that scans your e-mails
before they are downloaded, and use AVG or Avast for scanning the PC.

I haven't had one get by it yet, so, I can say honestly that it has caught
everything I have received thus far. But, I hardly get any viruses, only a
few Spams now and then.

Well....then I must have a few lives left yet. ;-)

While I am curious, my curiosity does not transcend to mindlessness. I
primarily look to see if by chance they have been sent by someone I know, so
that I can advise them that they are infected and to clean their machine.
Also, what virus or whatever is was, so that I know what I'm getting. Then
I just delete the works. :)
