AVG and Outlook Express

Kevin

I've just replaced my 98 laptop with an XP laptop and things were fine
initially but as soon as I downloaded AVG, Outlook Express has ground
to a halt. I have disabled the email scanner and the resident shield
but the I am still having problems.
Should OE work with AVG or not in which case am I looking for a new
email and news reader.

Uninstall AVG, then reinstall it using the Custom options - and uncheck the
Outlook Express plugin when offered it.
This prevents the plugin being installed, and removes the chance of a
conflict.

What was the previous AV?? - NAV in particular is a pain to rip out
properly, and can leave things behind to conflict with replacements

Wise move no matter the outcome of your problem. :)

Among others, you could consider Thunderbird for mail (and news), but I
like 40tude Dialog for news - more robust.

I use OE and IE. Every time I've tried other stuff out there, always some
annoying problem, usually with web sites not working correctly. I used
Pegasus for a long time, but even that gave me a problem with a distribution
list. I keep xp completely updated, use mailwasher and avast and never get
problems with a virus. Not a big deal if I did since I maintain a robust
backup strategy.
I believe virus problems are due to:
a) Employees in a corporate environment who couldn't care less.
b) Users not exercising normal care and precautions.

When I find a web site that doesn't work as expected (especially if it
will not allow me the content and navigation), I look elsewhere. If I'm
in a good mood, I'll leave the webmaster a note, if there is a contact
form.

Define "correctly". IE-only ActiveX?

You're probably aware that Firefox and Opera can spoof UA string to
pretend they are IE. This will get you into most sites that look for ..
um .. IE or Netscape.

Good plan.

I think I would list b) first. <g>

This is getting OT for the OP, though, who said he was looking for a new
email/news client.

That's not the way I read it - my reading was that he was looking for a way
to get AVG and OE playing happily in the same sandbox!

Guess I figgered why mess with OE and jumped to that conclusion. :)
