Hi Ron,

Well if the paid version did find one more virus, it doesn't any longer. As
of 8:25 AM EST on 2/25/07 the free version has virus base 268.18.3/700 also.

Alan I guess i should have worded my post a little different leaning towards
the joke that it was. I don't think each number relates to a single virus. I
think i remember reading that the paid version of AVG updates first and in
advance of the free version. My numbers are the same now as of last night,
OT: We never got an answer to those questions about sending quarantined files
or did we ?

I realized you were joking, Ron. And my response was made as a joke also.

Maybe I need to practice my timing and delivery techniques when I attempt
humor. :>

Wow, that was a major download for me yesterday, the 24th, and I got it in 2
stages, but am reading 700, and yes, I have the free version. Glad everyone
is up to date on this, and as usual, we always find folks here letting us
know about updates on things.

Enjoy the weekend folks, and CYL....:)

I think i just realized that i asked an OT question to the wrong Alan (Alan D)
Although I believe I am the 'right' Alan (Alan D), I'm sorry to say that I
agree. We don't have a proper answer to our question, namely: when a file has
been 'quarantined', is it changed in any way? If we submit such a quarantined
file to an online scanner, and if it had been a nasty thing before it was
quarantined, would the online scanner still recognise it as a nasty thing?

Perhaps some passing expert can tell us?

AVG updates daily. Until recently, I would get a notice on boot-up that AVG
is updating and after the update was completed, I would have 30 seconds to
click OK, or it would click itself OK. Then last week, I would get a
warning that I needed to restart the puter for the latest updates to take
place, and I received no notice of the updates. I contacted AVG support and
they had me fiddle with certain settings to the avgdiag.exe file, which
resolved that problem. Now, however, I don't get any notice of any update,
but the Control Center shows that the files were, in fact, updated. OK by
me.

Forgot to mention that AVG updates daily at 8:31AM (at least for paid
subscribers). If the puter is not on there, it will, of course, update when
you boot up.

You could do a test to find out. The answer may differ depending on the
antimalware product involved.

Since the whole purpose of a quarantine is to allow valuable user files to
be retrieved and cleaned once the vendor has code which can successfully
clean a given infector, such files must be restorable to their original
condition--so that should be a given.

I suspect that you'd find that quarantined files are identified correctly
by, say, www.virustotal.com --but it would be worth testing.

You could use the EICAR test string as a testing mechanism.

(in general, I suspect that the answer will be yes--but I sure don't know
that from experience, and there could be somebody using some form of
transformation in the quarantine mechanism which the scanners can't deal
with.)

Hi Ron. I have the free version, so I have it set to update between 8-10 a.m.
and also do a complete scan at 10 a.m. each day. With the free version if the
update doesn't come in between the hrs. I have set, then I just manually do
it. Sometimes I will get 2 or 3 updates a day, that is why I check. I believe
with the paid version you get them automatically, no matter what time of day,
but not 100% sure, Robin would know.

BTW, you can set anytime you want to do the update and scan, that just
happens to be my preferance, as I am busy in the a.m., so I just let it do
it's thing. I love AVG, as do alot of my family and friends who have switched
from other Anti virus programs. I believe in the near future we are going to
get the paid version, but wanted to try it out before shelling out money, but
so far, no complaints....:)
