AVG sucks? If so, what should I use?

Why didn't upgrade to Kerio 4?

When I installed 2.1.5, it was the most recent free version. I've been on a
reaaaaalllllllyyyyyyy slllllloooooooowwwwww connection for the past few
months, and downloading anything's a pita. But I'm not too concerned about
keeping absolutely up-to-date, because my computer's on a home network, and
the network server has both a hardware firewall and a software one.

Getting broadband shortly, so might upgrade then.

Nah, I wasn't busting you for your line, just riffing off of it for myself.

Still, humility is -always- nice. ;-)

Yes, I do mean AntiVir Guard. The a should have been an r. Got
it here and it works great.

BTW what does AVG stand for? (I hate letters for names.)[/QUOTE]

I've always assumed it's "Anti Virus Grisoft" -- the latter being the
name of the company that owns it.

Why didn't upgrade to Kerio 4?

I started with Kerio 4, as someone recommended Kerio.

I loathed it, and when I mentioned it I was told that version 2 was
intended, so I use it and like it.

I asked if it was still secure; after all version 4 had arrived, and was
told it was.

Being a muppet all I know for sure is that Zonealarm, and then Kerio2 have
kept everything out and when I'ce gone to the security check website,
always passed 100%

I prefer two simple to use antivirus freeware progs, AntiVir and
FProt for DOS.

They are free too but have serious drawbacks imho :

AntiVir -> update files are generally 1.5 MB big
FProt for DOS -> no support for NTFS partitions

I believe you might be referring to AVG and not AntiVir Guard. I have a
configuration center but not a control center and there is no mention of
update. That I find anyway.

That I was. This transient senile dementia is getting to be a real drag.

I don't know where your "antivirus tester" is coming from but I've got
my supicions.

Thanks, most of you, for your comments. It seems that AVG has a good
following and a great reputation, which must be why I switched to it a
year or so ago. How about this avast4 the poster mentioned? Is it possibly
a serious competitor for AVG or not?

Ohhh ... I see my error. It seems that I neglected to add the link to the
original review. Sorry about that. (It certainly helps explain the
"troll" comments, methinks.) It's http://www.suggestafix.com/index.php?

For me, it's not about competion - I only moved away from zonealarm because
someone (falsely) undermined my confidence in it; I'd switch back tomorrow
if I needed to.

There are freeware progs of good provenance out there - find one that suits
you and thank the gods of freeware that you don't have to use Norton of
Macafee!

I used AVG and afterwards Avast!4.
I'd never go back. If you ask me why, I can tell that AVG updates were
difficult, I couldn't find a way to exclude files/folders from the complete
scanning (this can be my fault, I don't know), finally it found a worm that
it was not able to delete, so I downloaded Avast! that found and deleted it
immediately.

If I go to AVG's control center, I can download updates on demand
and/or test my machine straight away or schedule it later.

I love it!

Thanks for the comment. I would appreciate more comment about Avast!
versus AVG. Thank you.
