AVG sucks? If so, what should I use?

I've been using AVG for a while now and was disturbed to find this from a
anti-virus program tester's results:
I retested Grisoft AVG http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php and it
once again proved that it is still the biggest piece of junk anyone
could use. I was so disgusted that I didn't even finish testing it.
Anyone that uses this program does so at their own risk. It
consistently detects only a little over half the viruses in the wild.
If it doesn't find everything it's supposed to, then how do its users
know if it's doing a good job? They wouldn't know if their system is
infected or not until something happened or they used an online
scanner.
Which ones are the best? PC-cillin, AVP, Norman and McAfee rated the
highest and are pretty much tied, followed by (in order of
effectiveness) Avast, AntiVir, Norton. Stay away from EZ Antivirus and
Grisoft AVG.

So now I'm confused and wondering what freeware program I ought to use ...

I don't know where your "antivirus tester" is coming from but I've got my
supicions.

I've used AVG for years, along with Zonealarm, which I ditched recently on
no more than a shithouse rumour, and ended up with Kerio 2.1.5.

I've never had a virus, only once a browser hijack.

A long time ago I bought Norton, then MAcaFee to get rid of the Norton, and
finally when I'd got rid of _that_ found out about the freeware resources.

You may of course be trolling, that would be your problem, as surely
someone who spends time around this ng should be a bit more aware....

but if not stick withe the recommended freeware

Funny how no test results or details were mentioned by the "tester".
Sounds like an anti-AVG post to me. It's all good and well to bitch
about a product, but without details on what was tested, and how, then
it all comes down to hearsay and lack of substance.

Is Kerio 2.1.5 compatible on a W2K OS?

I used AVG for about three years with absolutely no problem. I got a good
deal on Kaspersky and am using that now, but I wouldn't hesitate to go
back to AVG.

That's my 2 cents.

As per my previous post on this "tester", the person has no idea.
EZ Antivirus is actually a very highly-respected anti-virus scanner:

"EZ Antivirus is the Winner of PC Authority's Oct. 2002 'Recommend
Award' and the only leading antivirus to score 100/100 in 'wild'
virus detection (PC World, July 2002)."

I tried several times to download AVG while I was on a modem connection,
I never succeeded to download it because their file server was very
flaky and allowed no resume. Their policy versus freeware users is
obviously not very considerate.

When I got cable connection I downloaded and installed it, tried it, and
uninstalled it immediately. I don't remember exactly why.

I prefer two simple to use antivirus freeware progs, AntiVir and FProt
for DOS.

I use an earlier version of FProt for DOS, because the later versions
have a problem which gives an error in my win98 machine.

http://www.free-av.com for AntiVir.

You are attempting to raise concern about an excellent Freeware Program
based on a negative review, by an anonymous author, performing a set of
unspecified examinations, who jumped to a conclusion before running a
complete set of tests. You are either naive or a TROLL.

I don't know if AVG stands for AntiVia Guard or not but it if it does, I
have been using it every since I finally got rid of Norton a couple years
ago and I think it works just fine. I check at least once a day and
sometimes twice and there is usually an update there every time. I have
never used one that kept things that up to date before.

Anyone know if there is an automatic update option?

Control Center>Update Manager>Allow Scheduled Update. It can only be set
to check for updates at a specific time. The machine needs to be
running, of course. AFAIK, you *can't* set it to check at startup.

Of course, you could switch to Linux.

If my 70 year old mother can use Outlook an MSIE and not get infected
by using AVG...well that's about as good of a test I know of.
I have three OS systems on my box. Windows XP Home as main OS.
SuSE 9.1 Linux on a Virtual drive. And, Windows 2000 Pro on a virtual
drive as a *Sandbox* for testing programs before I decide to use them
in XP.
From my own experiences <and I don't use live *bait* virii> I would
disagree w/ the commercial AV ratings...One of the best I have
tested/use is not even listed?
Do you have a link to the site of the *tester* ?

Yes, I do mean AntiVir Guard. The a should have been an r. Got it here and
it works great.

BTW what does AVG stand for? (I hate letters for names.)
