AVG problem + question about Avast!

Vanessa S.

Today I downloaded the free version of AVG and attempted to install it on a
PC running WinXP Home Edition. This machine is one year old and came with
XP installed. I cannot launch AVG, getting an error message "Drive (CORE)
not found winerr=2". The only reference I can find to this on the AVG site
pertains to systems that have been upgraded from Win98 to XP. Possibly a
corruption in the download? Just try again?

I have just been reading about Avast! How does this program compare to AVG?
Is one preferred over the other?

This machine belongs to my b-i-l. He is also running SpyBot and the free
version of ZoneAlarm. Last year he purchased and attempted to install NAV
Internet Security, but could never get it to work properly. It froze his
system the three times he tried to install it. He gave up in disgust, but
was stuck with it.

Avast free has a much better email scanner than AVG free .Avast passes the
email through its server before you recieve it.AVG free just scans the inbox
after its arrived.Avast is better detection wise than AVG and has a support
forum where free users can get help often from the developers themselves. ,
The downside is that avast is heavier on resources and slower scanning ,
something that a modern pc probably wouldnt worry about.

Agree with all the points this bloke mentioned. Avast! althought heavier on
resources than AVG still isn't as resource hungry as other software such as
NAV, and the latest version of McAfee. Download it and give it a go :)

I don't think you have a problem with AVG;
You have a problem with a partially removed NAV.
Check on the Symantec site for instructions for cleaning up partial NAV
removals, uninstall then reinstall AVG.

I've used them both and vastly prefer Avast! over AVG. After you see both
of them in action, Avast clearly is a far more professional job. The
automatic updates work much better, it has 5 different services you can turn
on or off depending on if you need them (Exchange mail, Internet mail, P2P,
Instant Messaging, OnAccess Scan), and it REALLY catching viruses in
incoming mail before it's downloaded onto your system. AVG just scans the
dbx files after the virus has been downloaded.
