AVG or Avast ?

I've decided to abandon ship on mcafee .
I'm wondering whether i should go with
avg or avast . are there any major
differences between the two ?

I like Avast better. AVG is kinda clunky.

Not that much, AVG has a more simplified interface and fewer options
and configuration to setup. Avast seems to have a "Heavier" footprint
on the machine ( System Resources ) than AVG Free.

1. Uninstall the McAfee application via Add/Remove Programs.

3. Reboot.

4. If you need a free AV app, install Avira AntiVir or Avast4. I do not
recommend AVG anymore.

 

[Confusing Advice]

What I don't like about Avast is the scheduling for updates. Updates
interfere with some apps. When the app is running it stalls and later you
find out it was Avast updating. It also does it at bootup which stalls or
slows boot. I'd like to schedule updates for certain times instead of every
so many minutes.

having tried both I have found that AVG uses less system resources than Avast.
both are good products and come in FREE as well as $$$ versions.
but AVG takes up 15-20% less system resources.
and I have a Amd 6000 dual core with 4gb memory running 64 bit versions.

I got pelted by so many updates with Avast ...and I think they all
required a reboot, so I dumped it and went back to AVG.

You don't think, then. Avast only needs a reboot after a program update.

I don't think you've ever used Avast and you're just making it up as you
go along.

I use free AVG on a Vista machine and free AVAST! on an XP machine. No
problems with either application. If you have two PCs, there is an
advantage having two different applications in that it is less likely
both machines will become infected by the same virus. As stated many
times, use only one anti-virus application on any single PC.

Have used both, but settled for Avast for the past two years on a couple
of machines, one running XP Home and the other Vista. It works quietly
in the background, virus sig updates can happen 2 or 3 times a day and
never need a reboot. The only indicator is a slightly American voice
quietly announcing, "Virus database has been updated." I find it kind of
reassuring, which it's no doubt meant to be. Very rarely there is also a
program update and that may require a reboot. I think both are excellent
considering they are free, but Avast seems to have greater
configurability (IS there such a word?). Seriously, you can use it
without problems - at least that has been my experience for a couple of
years now.

I've used Avira (the best), but that showed continuous activity when
used with zone alarm so I went back to Avast but that had some problem
or other so now I'm using AVG. There isn't much difference between any
of them, AVG seems to be very light on resources. My reason for
switching may not be applicable to other users although I can't for the
life of me recall why I replaced Avast.

Avast! has a bootscan option; open its control panel, there's menu
button on the upper-left. I like AVG because you don't have to register
every 14 months. There are others available for free.

I used AVG in the past but switched to Avast. It checks for updates every
four hours and doesn't have the cluncky updating that AVG has. I do put AVG
on peoples computers as it doesn't require re-registering as Avast does.
Some people are incapable of re-registering and it quits updating. I also
like Avira but it has a couple of nasty splash screens. There are
work-arounds to shut them down. I use AVG, Bit Defender and Clam as
on-demand scanners. The latter two do not have active resident scanners in
the free version.
