Avast and AntiVir together

Because the consensus seems to be that no one antivirus software can
catch ALL viruses, I decided to install both Avast and AntiVir. I
figure that I can't have them both running at the same time because they
might interfere with each other... AM I right? ...but I could turn one
off when I use the other to scan my hard drive to check that nothing got
through.

My dilemma is that at the beginning of the AntiVir installation, the
screen says:
It is strongly recommended that you uninstall
all resident virus guards of other vendors.
Multiple virus guards installed on the same
system cause an invalid or instable system in
most cases.

the reason they say that is not because something bad will happen if you
don't, but rather because something bad *might* happen if you don't...
