AvantBrowser vs MyIE2 vs SlimBrowser ?

AvantBrowser, MyIE2, SlimBrowser are all 3 tabbed browsers based on
IE html render engine.

Which one do you use and why do you prefer it to the two others ?

I used crazybrowser for a few months before but it was getting aging.
It couldn't stop some script errors and didn't support customizable
toolbars such as google bar.

So last week I switched to SlimBrowser for a few days but a serious
bug occured in that version and the address drop down list was messed
up. Very annoying. (I believe that they already fixed the problem by
now).

Kept searching and found Avant Browser, which is currently what I am
using.
Good stuff:
1. Fastest in loading page.
2. The interface is very clean and tabs look blended in.
3. Support third party tool bars
4. Stable

One drawback:
There seems to be a memory leak and the whole screen can mess up after
a very long period of usage (a few days). It will not respond to user
input and you have to use Task Manager to kill the process.

That's three IE bolt-ons. Have you condsidered a browser that doesn't
need bolt-ons?

And you're still stuck with all those critical MS updates.

Big deal, when they're released, I install them...it's pretty
painless.
Meanwhile, I have a hardware firewall, a software firewall & a virus
checker, along with several spyware stoppers/removers.
Why can't you anti-MS types just accept that some people prefer an IE
based browser?
If you don't, then go with Mozilla, Firebird, whatever...knock
yourself out.

I, for one, do accept that.

I also accept that some people are still playing with their Ataris; that
some people believe that the US manned lunar landings were faked; and that
some people fall for 419 scams.
If you don't, then go with Mozilla, Firebird, whatever...knock
yourself out.

I do that, as well, which doesn't in any way impinge on my ability to
accept those four things you and listed.

Apart from a tabbed browser based on IE, I am also using Mozilla but
rather to test webpages than to browse. I would like to have a
browser independant from my OS but does Mozilla have the following
features : popup blocking, flash blocking, url groups in an editable
format (notepad) ?

Besides, on my computer (P IV, 256 MB), Mozilla takes about 6
seconds to be launched whereas CrazyBrowser takes about 2 seconds.

Firebird will do all those, either natively or with extensions
installed. (I *think* the tab groups are editable in notetab...though
I've never tried it).

FB starts in 2.017 seconds here :)

Yes, the lastest versions seem to have this problem after heavy usage. I
like Avant the best of the IE-based browsers, but until this problem is
resolved I will be using MyIE2 and Opera more often.

Good to see someone keeping up the good fight, Knut my friend. I've
given up, since all the MyIE people actually seem to think that these
add-ons _ARE_ browsers. As for me, I'm now counting down the days to
getting my hands on Mandrake 2, back to Quanta Plus, Galeon (or
Firebird), and of course, staying with the world's best Kitchen-sink
editor/newsreader/tetris/calendar/coffeemaker/particle
accelerator. Bring it on!

I've always thought they must -- I'm sure it's in the basics of the IE
engine that these problems reside, not the external presentation of
that engine by IE/MyIE/Avant/etc.

I have downloaded some firebird extensions and all work great ; I
have also downloaded the flash player (the one pointed by firebird
when trying to access to .swf files). Yet, it seems that firebird
doesn't detect the flash player and therefore doesn't display the
flash files properly. Have I missed anything ?

FB is quicker than Mozilla but still slower than CD (3.5s vs 2.0s).

I used to be a Netscape user for many years and one day I found that
some webpages didn't display properly and I switched to IE and never
looked back. However, I am still using Netscape mail which can
recognize the old format.

A few weeks ago I tried the new version of Netscape (7.1?) and it was
too slow to start up. I am still using an old computer which may be a
factor. But it's much slower than those IE shells.

I am not a fan of Microsoft and not an anti-MS person either. What
works for me is what I choose. (However, I am a fan of Palm and will
never buy a Pocket PC :)) Because of the market share of IE, a lot of
websites are designed for or optimized for IE which is something not
under the control of you and I, though we are free to choose whatever
browser.

As to security or patches, I have no problem since windows update
automatically downloads them for me. Sometimes I do download them
proactively if there is security warning news in the media.

I think Avant Browser is still the best browser (IE shell) out there,
at least for me. Though I have never tried Opera and not interested
either since a co-worker has told me some DHTML pages of my company
Intranet have problem on Opera.

You've put your finger on it. Within the Avant/MyIE2/SlimBrowser/CB
field, there's not an incredible amount of difference going on --
they're all excellent products, and it comes down to personal
preference.

FWIW, I liked MyIE2 best of the freeware IE shells, but about 6 months
ago went over to a paid-for shell that I really liked. (Freeware is
wonderful, but I'm also happy to pay for software that does something I
want that's not offered -- or at least "not offered yet" -- in
freeware.)

What is the *payware* browser that you use Harvey? If I may ask without
offending anyone. I'm very interested in another fully-functional IE
based browser.

Thanks,

It would seem that the flash thingy hasn't been updated for later
versions of FB :(

Yes, you are just WAY smarter than those of us who prefer Avant. I
bow to your intelligence.
