Autonumber/Excel

How can I import data from Excel into an Access table with a primary key of type Autonumber? If, for example, I have two fields in my table, the PK and a text field, and I import from a test spreadsheet that has one column, the text field, I get an error because there's only the one field. I can't imagine that Access wouldn't create the key for me, but that is certainly the way it's working for me. Is there a way to do this

What I've done in the past is import the data to a new
table, then use an Append query to add the data from the
new table to the old table.
