Automatically Purge Deleted Items

I recently reinstalled all software on my computer,
including microsoft outlook 2003. i had it configured in
the past where when i hit the delete button, while having
an email selected, the email would automatically be sent
to the deleted items folder. now, the only way to get
this result is to hit purge deleted messages. also, when
i hit delete, the messages are simply striked-through.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sure sounds like you switched from using POP3 for inbound e-mail to
using IMAP. Outlook (I use 2002) does not delete the message from the
mail server (its delete function is local to the message store for
already downloaded messages). For IMAP, Outlook only marks the message
as deleted but you have to actually send the command to the IMAP mail
server to have it delete the messages (i.e., you issue a command to the
mail server to perform a non-local operation). I believe Outlook
Express will issue the Purge command to the IMAP mail server when you
switch folders but Outlook 2002 won't do that (don't know if Outlook
2003 changed this behavior). See the following KB article:

OL2002: How to Use an IMAP Account with Outlook 2002
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=287574

Read the section titled, "Different Deletion Model". Also see:

These were found simply by visiting Microsoft's support web site
(http://support.microsoft.com/) and searching on "imap delete message"
for Outlook.
