Automatically marking emails as read after preview

Why is it the only way Outlook will automatically mark an email as read after
it's been viewed in Preview when you click _away_ from the email? It doesn't
matter where you click away, just the fact that you did somehow registers
that you've read the email.

The problem with this is that Outlook doesn't know whether I've actually
read the email; if Preview is disabled and you open an email, it gets
automatically marked read before I can even start reading the email. It
doesn't wait for me to click away from it.

So why does it need to wait for me to click away from it while Preview is
enabled? If it's marked read the second it's previewed, it's the same thing
as opening it. No? Can anyone explain the logic behind this or at least why
they won't adjust it?

You can change this behaviour to your preference under Tools/ Options/ Other/
Reading Pane (for 2007) and then select your preferred behaviour.
