Automatic Updates Seems Stuck

In the icons section in the lower right of the desktop, which I think
is called the Taskbar, the little yellow shield with the exclamation
point in the middle (!) has been reading "Downloading updates: 44%" for
about 30 minutes on my Toshiba notebook computer. In the past, the
number keeps climbing. Any ideas as to what's happening? Thanks.

I finally gave up, signed off of AOL, turned off the computer -- at
that point 4 automatic updates were installed. Turned the computer on
again, signed on to AOL, and the update icon is gone. In the past, it
always ran up to 100%, then a little message window would say something
like "click here to install automatic updates." Would like to know what
happened this time. Thanks.
