Automatic Send/Receive no longer working

My send/receives no longer happen unless I click on the send/receive button.
I increased the time between Send/Receive from 5 to 10 minutes and no
improvement. I also tried setting up a new Send/Receive Group and that
didn't help either. I am using Windows XP with Outlook 2002 and have 3 email
accounts.

It is difficult to determine why automatic polling is failing when you do
not post your mail account type, connection type and polling settings. If
automatic polling once worked and now fails, you also need to examine what
changes were made to your setup before automatic polling stopped working.

In general, here are the reasons automatic polling might fail in Outlook:
1. You have created an unrealistic polling interval. Many users set their
polling interval to 1 minute thinking they will be downloading mail
continuously as it arrives. Such settings are not recommended. They put an
unnecessary strain on mail servers and can create conflicting polling
requests that can damage your Send/Receive Group or even your account
settings. 10 minutes is the recommended minimum.
2. While exiting Outlook, you inadvertently set your profile to Work Offline
(this option is immediately above the Exit command in the File menu).
3. You have a damaged Send/Receive Group as documented here:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q312/3/36.asp
4. You have overridden your Send/Receive Group settings as documented here:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q320/8/36.asp
5. Your mail account settings are corrupt. Recreate your mail account from
scratch.
6. Firewall software is blocking your transmission. Disable your Firewall
temporarily to see if automatic polling is restored.

I have 2 POP3 accounts from different providers and one hotmail email account
and they all stopped working at the same time. I had already tried all of
the suggestions you made other than setting up a new account as I thought it
unlikely that all 3 had a problem at once. (I saw your suggestions under
another post). I have Norton Internet Security and have had trouble with it
from time to time but even disabled that doesn't seem to be making a
difference with this problem. I have a Cable connection and do not recall
making any changes in my settings preceding the problem. With regards to
Send/Receive Groups, I have the first 2 boxes under Online checked and the
first box under offline. Both set to 10 minutes. I have one set up for all
accounts (the original), then I added one for each account separately, same
settings and turned off the first account. Still no luck. I have my sent
mail set to send immediately when connected and have tried changing that off
and on and still no luck. By the way, I do not have "Disable scheduled
send/receive checked".

I also have a likely related problem on the sent side where items in my
outbox switch from italicized to nonitalicized but never show up in the sent
folder and stay stuck in the outbox. If I reopen the email and click send
again, then do a manual send/receive immediately (before the italics
disappear), then it goes out of my outbox and into my sent items. I just
found out that some (not all) other people are getting 2 duplicate emails
from me lately despite the fact that they only show once in my sent mail in
outlook. I sent an email to myself and did not get a duplicate so have been
unable to determine when/why it happens.

You're the only one with the clues here. I've posted all the known fixes.
You obviously have more than just a problem with Send/Receive groups.
Tried a new profile?

I uninstalled Norton Internet Security and the problems with Sent Mail
italics disappearing is no longer an issue. I am down to only that automatic
send/receive and send immediately options both are not working. I opened my
pst file under another user's account on the same machine and it works fine
so my pst file must be OK and Outlook installation must be OK. Just
something wrong in my user account Outlook. Unless you have any other ideas,
I guess I will be transferring to a new user account and getting rid of the
old one.

Ok. Figured it out. Although not previously checked, the Work Offline
became checked probably when I was verifying it was not checked. Now all is
working so I am assuming that the whole problem was related to Norton
Internet Security and uninstalling that has helped. Apparently since SP2 was
released, Norton Internet Security has been having trouble with compatibility
with Outlook.

You seem to understand this subject well...can you tell me why I now have to
MANUALLY ask to receive email when I select "inbox" after upgrading to Vista.
This used to happen automatically when i had Outlook? thanks in advance. RBey

I assume you created a new Outlook profile after an OS upgrade? You must.
