Automatic Scan starts too early

I have the latest version of Windows Defender set to automatically do a full
scan on my system every day at 2:00AM.

However, I notice that the scan will often start well before 2:00AM (as
early as 1:35AM) in some cases.

Does anybody know what is causing this and/or what I can do so that it
doesn't start scanning until 2:00AM?

Thanks,

I believe the thinking behind this was to avoid having any automated
signature downloads that might take place before the start of a scheduled
scan all kick off at the same instant when used in a corporate environment,
so the scheduled scan times are only an approximate time not a hard and
fast time to start. Perhaps you should set it to occur around 3:00AM if
2:00AM is a problem.

My understanding is that this approximation was going to be made clear in
the help files... apparently this has not yet happened.

here is one too,
I had it scan in the afternoon but changed it because my AVG scanned at the
same time and that takes around 2hrs for a complete scan
I reset it to scan at 2am
the computer goes into sleep mode normally after 8pm since that is around
when we stop using it. WD showed me it did not scan for 2 days since i made
the change in time.
Shouldn't it still scan since the computer technically is still on?
Ewido is set to scan 4am and it did its scan

Hi Robin,

Scheduled scans are done via the Windows Scheduled tasks facility.

Go to Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Scheduled tasks.

In the menu at the top, choose Advanced, View hidden tasks and Notify me of
missed tasks.

You should see an entry for MP Scheduled Scan.

If you right click this entry, and choose to run it--what happens?

I hope this post is helpful.

Thank you for this. I was able to change some settings that will hopefully
eliminate a problem that I have been having with the scan running during the
day while I am working.
Once I realized that tasks could be hidden (and unhidden) I was able to,
through advanced scheduling, change the duration at which it will attempt to
run the task if it does not run at the scheduled time. (This apparently is
the issue for most people, including me, who could not figure out why the
scheduled scan at 2AM runs seemingly randomly through the day). And on the
Settings tab you can specify that it should only run if the computer is Idle
as well as have it wake up the computer to do the task while you sleep.
