autoexec.nt error

I turned my computer on this morning and when I went to use a program that I
use daily, I received a windows error (16-bit windows subsystem error) -
"c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft windows applications." Close or Ignore.

Any idea what this is and how it can be corrected. I tried to uninstall the
program and reinstall it and the same error appeared during the installation.
I also reverted back to a previous restore point and the error still
existed????? PLease help.
