I have gone to the control panel to enable the Automatic
Windows update and the entire box is disabled (grayed out).
The box is to automatatically updat is checked the it says
Auto update is unavailable. I do not get the updates
automatically I have to go in manually and retrieve the
updates that way. Any help out there for this problem?
Thanks for looking.

Far better to go in manually. Microsoft help in Win2K tells
you not to use the Admin account online, but also tells you
that some programs will not install properly if an Admin
account is not used. Go figure ;-)
Create a User/PowerUser account for online work to
download what you need and then while offline install
using an Admin account.
You must have a firewall and up-to-date AV to confirm
the firewall is protecting you. Also note that when
installing programs offline, your AV should be disabled.
Personally, I have no use for updates with solid firewall
protection.
