Auto Update caused Big Problem for me - HELP!

)Win XP Home SPII
My auto update installed Internet Explorer 7. I hated it and followed the Microsoft instructions to delete it and go back to IE 6. Worked fine, except now I don't have PAINT and WORDPAD (all that I've noticed missing).
My computer came with Windows XP and I don't have disks. I DO have backup disks and I DO have the Windows XP program disks for the one that is on my laptop.
Microsoft wants to charge me to recover the programs. HP (the computer manufacturer) wants me to restore my computer and will SELL me a disk fo $45.

Isn't there some way I can just install those two programs????
Thanks for any help!

Just an observation;
A supplier 'must' supply some means of recovering your sys to factory state,
you sure you haven't a hidden recovery partition?

Great site... I was able to recover Wordpad, but not PAINT even though it
said it had written to the registry. I shut down and re-started in case it
needed that but PAINT still not working.

I found the MSPAINT.EXE in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache. The property to
the shortcut shows that it was previously in C:\Windows\System32. Could the
files be divided between the two areas? I don't know what files are
associated with MSPAINT. Where to go from here?? Thank you!!

I don't know. I'm not an incredibly knowledgable user so maybe! How can I
find out if there is one?? Thanks!

Open Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components,
Accessories (double-click), Accessories, Deselect Paint. Exit, reenter,
add Paint.

UPDATE: I fixed the MSPAINT problem myself by copying the file from the wrong
directory into the right directory and re-creating the shortcut. So... I am
VERY glad
to have avoided unnecessary expenses - Microsoft (who should have helped me
since IE7 caused it) and HP (which won't be considered when I purchase a new
computer). Thanks for your help!!

I guess you didn't read the numerous articles, pros and cons and advice about
the IE7. So I am thankful also that Microsoft helped with your mistake. Also
HP charges about $12 to $18 dollars for restore discs which I guess you did
not bother to create initially. I have 5 HP PC's. But, Microsoft support is
the best!!!!
