Auto Run

Uhh, got an easy one, I -think-, folks.

Have a CD with a game/winning lottery number generator, or
whatever on it, and there are the usual autorun.inf and
autorun.exe files in the root of the CD.

Usta bee, I could slip the CD into the drive, and voila! Up came
the program, running and ready to start, or at least an opening
menu. Sort of like the MS install progs, but runing a game,
whatever instead.

But(t);n-oooooo, not no more! I have searched Help and Support
on the machine and the Internet MS KB until I'm feeling blue all
over and I can't figure out how to get XP (Pro) to automatically
start a CD when it's put in the CD drive.

Music plays automatically, so does video, DVD movies (it's a
combo drive; CD/DVD) and so on all do what they say they'll do.
But, stick a CD in there that's not on that list, eg a game or
other executable, and it won't auto-start. I recall one CD
having a "setup" that let it do that, but it was an old 95CD and
is long gone.
The idea is so kids can just toss their games into the drive
and have it auto-start when the tray closes.

Yes, I know I can put a Shortcut on the Desktop, but I'd rather
not do that. If I can get the CD to auto-start, then I can lock
the keyboard, hand the kids the mouse and joystick, and let them
play to their heart's content.

-- Is it as simple as I think it is?
-- Any advice on how to get autorun to execute automatically
and/or run the executable on the CD when the tray closes, as
happens with music, etc.?
-- Am I on the wrong group? Happy to take my quest elsewhere if
there is a better place.

Thanks in advance,

Pop

PS I'm going to also post this to another forum, but not sure
which one yet - so if you come across the duplicate, please
ignore it.

Gachk!! I said it'd be simple, didn't I? Hey, gotta at least
try to save face! I feel pretty dumb right now 'cause, well,
errr, it worked.

Thanks T!

Hi, Pop.
PS I'm going to also post this to another forum, but not sure which one
yet - so if you come across the duplicate, please ignore it.

If you had simply added that other NG name to the address space of this
message, it would have appeared in both NGs. Then, when I come to the
duplicate, it would already be marked "Read" and it would be easier for me
to ignore it. Also, any response posted - to EITHER NG - would show up in
both of them and you wouldn't have to remember to check them both. Also, if
you got bad advice in either NG, someone in the other could correct it.

What you are planning is "multi-posting". What I'm suggesting is
"cross-posting". Multi-posting is frowned on. Cross-posting is usually not
necessary, because the regulars here regularly read several newsgroups and
probably will see your question, no matter which relevant NG you post it in.
On those rare occasions when you MUST cross-post, please carefully select no
more than 3 or 4 relevant groups.

Now, as Taurarian said, just check out your CD Autorun setting.

And, if you had read the first para, you would have understood a
lot more. Apparently you'd rather rant on OT subjects than
attend to business. I had fully intended to cross-post a second
message, IFF I put one up, with this group's cross being under
the original one. 'Tain't exactully commpewter siense, after
all.

If I felt like doing something malicious and annoying on purpose,
I wouldn't have bothered to mention it. It's like your drift
here ass-u-me-ing my intents was off base. You've used a
boatload of bandwidth, albeit text, to say the same thing several
times over here. You've used a boatload of ...
Jeez, what do you do when you come across a troll or, uhhh,
ohhhhh, I see. Never mind.

Hi, Pop.

Sorry if I offended you.

As you know, we get lots of newbies here, especially in this "newusers"
newsgroup. So, when I saw that you were going to post in another forum, I
was guessing that you didn't know the difference between cross-posting and
multi-posting. Thanks for setting me straight.

Did Taurarian's suggestion work for you? Or can we help you further?

Not a problem, RC; I usually don't keep track of names anway.
I'm really too tired today and sick of the wind and cold, I
guess. My apologies also: You didn't deserve a retort. I could
have been clearer and avoided the whole thing, but I just
figured, "why? every knows that anway". But ... as you pointed
out ... .

As for Taurarian's suggestion, I'm about to try it. I'l post
back later or tomorrow - I mark threads usually so I can come
back if I get a success. Only trouble is, I forget to do that
too many times, too ;-]

Cheers,

I'm still learning myself - you would be amazed how dumb I can be sometimes.
Glad it was so simple and everything is working okay. Have a good weekend.
