My ISP (Cox) is offering a free security suite from Authentium. It
includes anti-virus, personal firewall, spyware scanner and parental
controls.

Does anyone know anything about these products and what vendor they are
actually made by?

Authentium is a partner of Frisk and use the Frisk F-Prot engine.

It it a top ten contender. It also has good heuristics.

Usually when a file is found heuristically by a F-Prot engibne, the name will be appended by
"!Maximus"

Thanks. F-Prot is not that highly rated, is it?

F-Prot has long been highly regarded, but my experience with it
some time ago was not good. I used to receive email attackments of
"new and unkown" malware, and I'd send samples to FSI, McAfee and
Kaspersky. The latter two would react immediately and provide
detection, but more often than not, FSI either reacted very slowly or
not at all.

I suspect that other observers have had similar experiences since
F-Prot is practically never mentioned or recommended here any
more. It still is "up there" fairly well in some large scale detection
tests I've looked at recently.

I've wondered if FSI went through a "slow period" because new
strategies were being worked out to handle non-viral malware.
For all I know, the situation may have changed, and FSI may
now be doing much better with "new and unkown" malware,
both in heuristic/generic detection, and in faster reaction times
when this fails.
