Attentio AVG users...the REAL story

D

DanS

There is no reason to be alarmed by the previous thread that posted tests
results showing AVG *Anti-Malware* as finishing last.

As it turns out, those results were for a 'forward-looking' A/V test.

Forward-looking as in, if you don't update the programs def files for 3
months, AVG *Anti-Malware* finished last, when exposed to threats that were
not known at the time.

The REAL test results of overall performance from AV-Comparatives are here:

Everyone has their preferences, that's fine.

I was just pointing out that the context of the OP thread was bogus.

Nobody has pointed out it was also off topic for this group.

How so?

In October, when many were testing Vista there were countless posts asking
what antivirus worked with Vista. Was that not off topic for this group
also? No, it was very topical for this group.

Does not AVG run on Vista and is it not used by countless individuals?

Do you not think that many of these users may be interested to find out that
a major layer of their protection may not be as competent as they had
thought it was?

They would. But all information should be presented properly and fairly.

Unfortunately, we/people - are not editors. People present what stimulates
their thought the most. At least with links we can read and see the complete
picture.

A post here, about an article, is only a synopsis of said article. The
complete article should be read to gain a full perspective. You did!

Because so many people fail to update their antivirus, a few organizations
are now testing with 3 month old definitions - to see how the protection
holds up. AVG didn't do too well. It is weak on heuristic analysis
apparently. Others antivirus programs are better.

I, for one, appreciate the different tests.

Sorry, apples and oranges. Asking which software works with Vista is
not the same as posting phony meaningless reports on software.

Irrelevent. So does Xnews, Pegasus Mail, Quicken, etc.

See above. Trolling is always off topic although constant trolling has
damn near rendered this newsgroup useless to people in need of help.

In my opinion, the post is very much "on target" and I appreciate being let
to the articles so that I could read them for myself.

OK, you're certainly entitled to your opinion. However, if I wanted a
comparison of AVs I believe I'd look elsewhere than this newsgroup,
specifically one of the Gibson Research Groups.... and that's my
opinion which I also consider off topic, OK?

Stop complaining and take control of your own viewing
experience. You may not like some posts or posters, others
may... it's not your decision what everyone else may like or
find relevant.

My killfile and scorefiles run many pages. That's of no help to the
newbies who come here looking for help and get lost in the static.

Then a newbie needs to learn how to search for a specific post
if the amount of posts are too overwhelming.

By the way, you just keep adding to the static.

My experience- it's not the original "off-topic" post
that is so distracting, it's all those that reply saying
how "off-topic" the post was, and then those who
reply saying they don't think it really was.... and on and
on and on the thread grows.

Next.

Good thing, too, because AVG blows both McAfee AND Norton out of cyberspace!
I have peronally been involved in cleaups caused by each of theses Vendors.
"M"'s Corporate allowed a 2 year old Melissa virus to infect of the company's
Canadian servers. Once we isolated it, we put it on a floppy and I brought
it home t see what AVG had to say about it. Caught, vaulted and flushed so
fast it made our heads spin! The "N" company allowed a Tojan to run all
through a good friend's computer. Before it was through wreaking havoc, it
took over the "N" program and changed numerous pertinent file extentions,
rendering the machine basically useless until I put AVG on the computer. In
no time at all, AVG had corraled the rabid horse, locked it in it's stable
and put it out of our misery. Thanks to he efficiency of AVG, I was able to
get him rebuilt and the OS restored on what theoretically wasn't much more
than scrap when we started. I wonder if Spynet will ever get it through to
Defender that AVG is a GOOD thing, especially when it's one of Vista's own
suggestions for Anti-Virus!!! I think it has proven itself worthy of more
than "In Progress" by now!
