attachments crashing windows mail

I suddenly find that any message containing an attachment causes windows mail
to go into "not responding" mode when I attempt to open or save the
attachment. This happens with all attachments, irrespective of the
application.

I can right click the file name and "save as" the attachment, which
successfully saves it to disc, but this at the same time crashes windows mail
as above.

Any thoughts anyone?

Most versions of the Norton antivirus program cause assorted problems
in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately. So do most versions
of the McAfee antivirus program. A recent version of the Trend
antivirus program also causes assorted problems in Windows Mail.
Just disabling part or all of these programs isn't enough; you need to
uninstall them instead. For the Norton programs, you also need to
run this cleanup program to take care of what the uninstall left behind:

You may even have to remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail and create the account again.

If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program that doesn't cause such problems. I recommend either
avast! or AVG, either one with a custom install that tells it to leave
out the part that scans email.

I'm using Microsoft One Care and have the same problem.
1. How do I stop this?
2. How can I set auto save in Windows Mail so atleast I don't lose much.
3. Where are those autosaved files (in case the one I just wrote can be
saved).

Windows help doesn't help beyond the definition of Automatic Save.

HELP!!!

1. Hard to say. First you will need to eliminate OneCare as the
possible culprit. The only way to do that is to uninstall it, then try
Windows Mail again. If no improvement, reinstall OneCare.

2. There is no auto-save.
