Attached Word docs change file types

Hi, group. A friend of mine has been attaching a particular Word doc to
Outlook Express email messages. When I received her email, the ".doc"
attachment had become a ".dat" file. When she sent it to another person,
that same attached Word document became an excel document. She thinks the
file type is changing from ".doc" to another file type as soon as she
attaches them. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. Joe Starin

Thanks for the reply, RWN. I checked out those sites you suggested. My
friend's computer isn't generating an additional file, it's changing the
extension of the Word doc that she's attaching. Sounds strange. And we both
us OE as our email clients, BTW, which I failed to mention. She claims she
saves the Word file properly, but when she later attaches it, it becomes
another file type. I wonder if a virus or spyware can be causing this? I
think I'm going to let my friend figure this one out on her own. I might try
posting to an EO newsgroup. Thanks, again. Joe Starin
