Att.-HP Pavilion AMD Users

If you have an hp pavilion with an amd processor, check to make sure it is
running at the speed its supposed to-I purchased an A640N with amd64 3200+
about a month ago and was very pleased with it untill a couple days ago I
noticed in the everest utility, it said the processor was running at 997mhz
at a factor of times5-its suppossed to be 2mhz factor10-to make a long story
short-I discovered microsoft driver for the processor was at fault-after
installing amd driver, had no idea this computer was supposed to be this
fast-the choppy doom3 is now smooth-the blobby dancer demo from Invidia that
really strained the processor before now runs like silk-this problem came
this way when I bought it, I'm sure, because shortly after buying,(couple
days) I downloaded a demo that said "your computer is not up to
specifications for this game-running at 997mhz" I let it slide because I had
heard sometimes programs can misread proper speed-if you have this problem,
you will be shocked at how much faster, smoother your computer becomes after
you fix it-

Did you recieve the computer from HP set up this way or did you "update
it" into said condition?

Hi bob-I take back all I said-well, mostly-I have since time found out the
drivers where amd's "powernow" -runs computer at an idle 997mhz till more
speed is needed-I'm still keeping the current one I'm using that keeps it at
a constant 2.0mhz-

Personally I would prefer the full speed/full time also, unless it was a
portable and needed the battery life.

Have you ever heard of "Cool n' Quiet"???
do a Google search and educate yourself before you go making yourself look
foolish...

Cool n' Quiet is worthless. I tried it out on my AMD 64 3200+. It
didn't run any cooler. It didn't run any quieter. I ended up
uninstalling it, and buying a new heatsink and fan from
Thermaltake, the Silent Boost K8. Now *that* runs cooler and quieter.

Cool 'n Quiet works very well. It requires a HSF that supports it and BIOS
that support it. Windows Power Management *MUST* be set to "Minimal Power
Management". Once this is done, it will automatically throttle both
processor voltage and timing to suit the current system requirements. I
have an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ on an ASUS K8V SE Deluxe, and my Processor
voltage will drop to 1 volt and speed step to 917 MHZ at idle, yielding a
proc temp of 33 Celsius. When I am gaming, it will go to full voltage and
full speedstep (2.2GHz) and a temp of 39-40 Celsius. You probably did not
have Cool n' Quiet configured properly for your rig. You need to install 2
drivers...one for the chipset on your motherboard, *AND* the AMD drivers.
id you did not install both and then follow the guidelines in the first two
sentences above, then you did *NOT* have Cool n' Quiet properly installed,
and therefore you received the results you stated.

NoNoBadDog-maybe you should read the full posts where I already said I since
time learned I was wrong and take back what I said, before you go making
yourself foolish-

Maybe you should look at the timestamps on message headers before you jump
to conclusions...

NOW what are you talking about-I posted my retraction on 11/1-you posted your
"look foolish" remark on 11/2----

Your Server posted my reply on 11/2. You are using the Web interface, not a
news reader, so you can't see the full headers. I actually sent my response
before yours...your server just did not pick it up until the 2nd. If you
use a news reader, you would be able to check the headers out...
