ATI Radeon X800 Pro - Benchmark problems

I just installed an ATI X800 Pro card and cannot get the 3DMark or Far Cry
benchmarks to work. Every time I try to run either, the programs crash and
it asks me if I want to submit an error report to Microsoft. I've tried the
4.8 and 4.9 beta Catalyst drivers with the same results. My old card (Radeon
9700 Pro) will run both benchmarks just fine with the same PC and same
config.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with the X800? I can't find
anything on ATI's web site or anywhere else on the web regarding this issue.

Thanks!

I just formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Pro. I then
installed my Radeon drivers and 3DMark before installing any other software.
3D Mark still crashes. Before I formatted, I tried playing Far Cry and the
graphics were all messed up (strange colors, tearing). I'm assuming that
problem still exists, as well. I haven't tried it yet, though.

I'm wondering if I have a defective card. Could that be possible?

System Specs
Dell Dimension 4550
P4 - 2.8 GHz
1 GB Ram
ATI Radeon X800 Pro

Thanks,

That's probably your problem right there. You should have installed XP with service
packs, your chipset drivers, DX, *then* your GPU, sound, and other interface drivers,
in that order. It may not mean that there isn't a problem somewhere else, but it is
something to consider (in addition to testing your memory with Memtest86 and the rest
of your hardware with Prime95).

IIWY, I would properly uninstall your Cats and sound card drivers, then follow the
order given above after the XP and service packs.

Sorry, I should have been more descriptive. I did install all of the XP
service packs and drivers THEN I installed my graphics card and 3DMark. I
just didn't install any applications or games before running my first test.

I found a few articles like this one about the Catalyst 4.7 (and greater)
drivers not working with 3DMark.
http://www.futuremark.com/community/drivers/?approved. My 3DMark test
crashes during the 3rd test, as described in that link. However, I installed
older drivers, and it still crashes.

I then tried installing several games, I noticed problems with slow-downs
(compared to my 9700 Pro) in just about all of them and severe tearing in
Far Cry. I don't overclock and have tried just about every card and game
setting available, with no change.

I guess I'll shoot ATI an email as I'm running out of ideas. If formatting
and reinstalling Windows didn't help, I don't know what will.

Thanks,
Todd K
