ASUS K9N-DL, AMD Opteron with non-ECC ?

Someone told me that the ASUS K8N-DL Dual Socket 940 mainboard with two
AMD64 Opteron (model 246) CPUs will work only with ECC memory. Is this true?
I need the fastest memory for around $130 to $160 per GB. Any ideas? Please
