Although Asrock is the 'cheaper' brand of Asus, some of the boards have had some good reviews, particularly the Socket 939 Dual Sata II :thumb:

Lemme see, four systems here, main one is DFI Lan Party Ultra B Nvidia 2 chipset.

All the other 3 are Asrock boards.

939 Dual SATA II with AMD 64 3200
K7NF2-RAID with an XP3200 and SATA RAID 0
K7VT4-4X with an XP2400.

That last one is two or three years old and crunched 24/7 all it's life up to a month or two ago. It's now my Suse 10/Mandriva 2006/Windows 98 machine.

Asrock make good, cheap no-frills motherboards, I'd recommend them within their limitations. Very few have Firewire, for instance.

They are, after all, a subsidary of Asus :)

It would seem, itsme, this is one of those rare occasions when we are in accord ;)

Flops, I am thinking of using the 939 Dual Sata II as part of a budget system for a friend after reading good reports as a budget board - as a user, would you go as far as recommending it?

Yes :) I've had no problems with it although the first thing I done was update the Bios.

It's the basis of my daughter's machine. When I upgraded my vid card I put my old 9800 Pro in her machine and it seemed a bit of a waste as the AGP slot in her board at the time was only 4 X.

So, all I bought was the board and a 939 processor and I got instant 64 Bitness.

As you probably know, it has AGP and pci-e slots so if you're on a budget, it can stagger your upgrade, which is economically attractive.

It has no hardware monitor software with it, btw, so I used Speedfan, a freebie program.

I only use Socket 754 for new customer budget builds now...

Why? That means all your builds have built in obsolescence.

I suppose that keeps them budget but I reckon socket 939 will have a longer future than 754.

Socket 754
They are good:thumb: but until Skt A becomes obsolete [won`t be long now] I will carry on regardless:D I find Skt A very reliable> all the PCs I have built> have never had one returned/complaint or to repair after completion:thumb: after the end its socket 939 :thumb:

Disagree all you like, I personally don't like them. :p

But then Asus were very clever in branding the name for their 'cheaper' boards ... PCChips did the same with ECS and I don't like them either.

As we ALL know, it doesn't matter what "brand" you buy ... they ALL have failures.

I once took a course change 3 years ago and bought an Asus board, it failed ... I got it replaced with an MSI ... that MSI gForce2 Skt A is/was my main PC until I bought my new Asus system. However, it will be back up and running as soon as my little brother remembers to bring me a new case for it. ;)

Now this is the time we go off topic ... :D

Funny that, Mucks, personally I don't like MSI boards, ever since two upped and died on me in a one year period.

I have tried a lot of different motherboards and I can say, hand on heart, I'm impressed with Asrock.

All told, only brands I'll entertain right now are Asus, Asrock & DFI. Apart from specialist boards of course, dual CPU & the like.

And 'Cadberies' is spelt 'Cadburys' ;)
