Hello,

Puzzle. For some reason I had two versions of Windows XP
installed. One of them stopped working because system32
\l_intl.nls was corrupted or missing, the other one
stopped working because of a different file similarly
kaput. Now I just get 'disk read error, press ctrl-alt-
del to restart' even before I get to pick which broken
version to try.

I've tried booting from a CD and using the Repair Console;
the DIR function doesn't seem to work and who knows what
else is busted. I also can't seem to copy files there, I
get a message saying I'm not authorized. If I'm not
authorized, who is? As for reinstalling Windows, the only
option it'll let me try is reformatting.

Argh. I have really a lot of stuff that hasn't been
backed up & so do the rest of my family. Any way to get
at it, do you think?

Thank you thank you,
Jow

As far as recovering important data, can't you use a DOS disc to boot and
copy files? You might use XCOPY. Good Luck.

That won't work with a NTFS formatted disk drive, unless you buy systernals
"NFTS for DOS".

I forget the actual command from the recovery console but it goes something
like chkdsk /s /u

Anyway, it worked for me - you just need to check which switches you need to
put on the end by typing chkdsk/?
