Cannot rename or delete, even using recovery console.

Machine won't boot -- can't find umpnpmgr.dll. DIR can find umpnpmgr.dll, but
it doesn't seem to be a real file. I can't rename it, or delete it.

I've tried the recovery console and BartPE -- point being, the "file" is not
in use.

When I try to rename it, I get, "The name specified is not a directory." DEL
just says, "The delete operation failed." DIR says it is 123392 bytes, which
is the same as the one on my XP Pro machine. The machine that won't boot is
XP Home.

Any help would be appreciated.

Save your important files, then run chkdsk /f while under
a Bart PE boot.

That didn't do it. But then I had a brilliant idea, and this worked:

I couldn't do anything to that file, but -- in Bart PE -- I could rename the
folder it was in; viz., system32. So I renamed it to badsystem32, created a
new empty system32 folder, then xcopied everything back -- ignoring errors
(/c switch). Everything except the evil file moved back. I downloaded a good
copy of the evil file and put it in system32 and, wow, it works!

Thanks for the suggestion. I probably didn't get all of the important files,
anyway since it's not my machine.

Nice investigative technique there! I hope you used the /h
switch for your xcopy command, to include all hidden files.

Long live the Bart PE boot CD!
