Area over Startbutton is black

R

Rainer Borchmann

Hello knows,

I have a real problem after updating
Windows, or sometimes of programs, the
Startbuttom over the area in which the last
programs are called BLACK.
The behavior is erratic, but always for an update.
The adjacent list of programs from
(above) to the My Documents (below) does not respond to Run click
see http://www.borchmann.de/bilder/PrtSc.JPG

That remains even after a reboot it.

I am grateful for every tip

"knows"?

Anyway...

Update the hardware drivers for your motherboard chipset and viodeo card.
Do this NOT from Microsoft but from the actual manufacturer's support web
site for your products.

It's very likely a problem with the driver for your video card. Get
the latest from the video card manufacturer, but *not* from the
Windows Update.

And please do not send the same message separately to more than one
newsgroup (called multiposting). Doing so just fragments the thread,
so someone who answers in one newsgroup doesn't get to see answers
from others in another newsgroup. And for those who read all the
newsgroups the message is multiposted to, they see the message
multiple times instead of once (they would see it only once if you
correctly crossposted instead). This wastes everyone's time, and gets
you poorer help than you should get.

If you must send the same message to more than one newsgroup, please
do so by crossposting -- sending a single message simultaneously to
multiple newsgroups (but only to a *few* related newsgroups).

Please see "Multiposting vs Crossposting" at

Do you have a Logitech web cam installed?
My brother had the same problem & I found a workaround by changing Control Panel (in
the Start Menu properties) to "Display as a link" instead of "Display as a menu".
Strange,but it worked.

-- Clark on Properties
-- At the top, click the tab, "Start Menu"
-- Click the button, "Customize"
-- At the top, click the tab, "Advanced"
-- You will see, "Control Panel"
----- Select the, "Display as a link"

You're very welcome.
That just happened to be one of those oddities that I had to deal with, over a year
ago, when my brother's computer displayed the same symptoms.
I was at my wits end, then, with this, & had thought as others, that the display
driver had to be at fault. I tried the update driver, rollback driver, etc. & still
could not get this thing solved.
If I hadn't experienced the same thing, myself, I would have had no idea what to do.
After all, this "workaround" would seem to have nothing to do with what's occurring.
Quite bizarre.
BTW- It was the first thing that I found when I Googled "start menu is blacked out".

Thanks for reporting back with your results.
