Archive.pst too bulky for smallish hard drive

I need to free up disk space, but my archive.pst is a very large file
already. Would it work to simply copy the current version of archive.pst to a
thumb drive, delete archive.pst on my hard drive, and then just create a new
archive.pst from there? But even this this works to free up disk space, I
don't see how I could access the removed version of archive.pst. If I copied
the removed version back to my hard drive, wouldn't it erase the later
version of archive.pst that had built up over time? If so, are there any
better solutions to the problem of an oversized archive.pst on a smallish
hard drive?

Disconnect you current archive.pst file from Outlook via;
File-> Data File Management...
Close Outlook and do whatever you want to do with the archive.pst file as
long as you either rename the file or move it out of the current folder.
The next time AutoArchive runs, it will create a new pst-file for archiving.
