Apps load Slow

I recently installed Win2K on a machine that had previously been running Win98. It is an AMD Athlon 1.4 processor and 384 MB of Ram. I installed using the NTFS format. It was fresh install on a drive that had been completely re-formatted
The only problem I have been having is that every application takes an extremely long time to load. I have numerous applications such as Microsoft Office, Quicken, etc. All of them seem to take at least 2-3 minutes to open up, some even longer
I have been unable to find anything on the web that references a possible cause or solution. I had no such problems with Win98. I use a laptop at work that has a slower processor and less Ram (PIII 1.1 / 256 MB), also with NTFS. I run many of the same apps and have no similar problems
Does anyone have any suggestions
Thanks

I am having a very similar problem. 2 days ago all my apps ran
normally, now certain ones take a very very long time to load.
SecureCRT is very slow (~3 min to load up), but SecureFX 2.0 loads fine
.... Netscape 4.8 is slow, but Mozilla 1.5 loads at normal speed. Print
preview from wordpad is very slow as well.

At first I thought that the programs were frozen or not working (since
they took so long), but soon realized they are just taking FOREVER.
While they are 'loading' their CPU usage is 0%. The only recent
software installation I have done is updating Warcraft III: Frozen
Throne. I know their last patch included some kind of SafeDisc CD
verification program that installs some kind of system driver. Could
this be causing my problems?
