Applying SP4 without any previous updates.

Leon

Over the weekend I setup a rack mounted server with Win2kServer, and
downloaded SP4 124-megs'ish onto the server.

Without any previous updates applied, I decided to hit the server with an
SP4 install.

What I find now is that while shuting down or restarting the server hangs
with a blank screen.

This very same server has 2kserver previously installed but the updates
where done gradually though windowsupdate.

And it worked fine!

Have I done something fuundementally wrong here.

What can I do to remedy the non-bootup after restarts?

Thx

You probably have a device driver (usually a CDR/Removable storage driver)
that is causing your system to hang during shutdown (Although, I've
actually had a case where it was a firmware issue with a disk controller.)

To troubleshoot this issue, I usually force a dump from the box or hook in
with a live debugger so I can actually see what driver is hanging the
system. Contacting PSS Support would be the best solution. I cannot really
write down here how to debug a box due to the difficulty involved.

Your second best option would be to perform clean-boot troubleshooting.

1. Find yourself a Windows XP/2003 box.
2. Copy MSCONFIG.EXE from that installation and run it on Windows 2000.
3. Follow the steps listed in the following article:
