Searching for and applying updates

Hello. I recently joined a new IT company that does not
keep its Servers updated with the Microsoft suggested
update revisions. Is there any was I can get the
Microsoft update utility to scan for updates and give me
simple, informative details on what updates are yet to be
applied, what issue the update will remedy and what will
be the effects of installing the update.
I think on average the servers are missing around 20
updates, and obviously I do not want to apply them all at
once without reviewing the effects each update has had on
the server.
