Applications Open and Close

My wife opened an email attachment on our computer. IE 6 closed, and from that point on if we try to open any application the splash page appears briefly and then instantly closes. Exception is Ad-Aware. OS is XP SP2. Everthing appears to runs normally in safe mode. Ran McAfee Scan (updated 20 Feb before incident) and Ad-Aware. Nothing stands out. Any ideas on what this is or tools to use to best attack it? Thanks.

Maybe a virus in the attachment? Did you know the sender?

Yes, that helps a lot, there is an "exploit" Trojan/Virus that can infect a PC embedded in a picture file.

The trouble with Windows is it does not show you "double dot" extensions ... .jpg.iamavirus ... unless you are handy with editing the registry.

Sorry, wouldn't give you tuppence for McrapAfee.
