Application popup: 16 bit Windows Subsystem error

I can't figure out this problem. The workstation is 2000Pro on a small
network with an application loaded on the server, 2003 SBS, with a shortcut
on the desktop pointing to the application on the server. When she double
clicks on the icon she gets a 16 bit Windows Subsystem dialog box saying
this application can not run in DOS and either close or ignore. No matter
which one I click, the program does not run. It was working fine until this
week and no one else on the network has this problem. Nothing new was
loaded, as far as I can tell, on the computer. The message below is the
event log error:

Application popup: 16 bit Windows Subsystem : C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT.
The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

Any assistance on this one is greatly apprecatiated.

The fix in that post refers to XP. Will it work on a 2000Pro machine?

Replace the AUTOEXEC.NT in the SYSTEM32 directory or look on Microsoft.com
article 142271.

Hi Frank - All of the solutions you've been given are appropriate; however,
Kelly's approach is somewhat easier in most cases:

"This installaton program will reinstall the missing or corrupt Windows XP
system files command.com, autoexec.nt and config.nt. The absence or
corruption of one or more of these files causes a "16 Bit Subsystem" error.

Thanks for all your assistance. I had to do a full install: recovery and
repair didn't work.
