Application Crashing in TS

P

Priyesh Shah

We have recently encounterd a problem that occurs at
random at half a dozen
sites each using a Visual Dataflex 7 application on
Terminal Server.

The sites complain of random dropouts from the vdf7
application with no
error messages. The application simply diappears from the
terminal session
as if it has been terminated - it also gets removed from
the task manager, and the operator can restart the app
and keep
working for several hours before it drops out again. The
dropouts cannot be
replicated by going to the same point in the application
and repeating the
previous keystrokes.

The common thread seems to be Win 2000 Server SP3 running
as an Application Terminal Server, with the data
stored as standard VDF on the Terminal Server. There is
plenty of RAM -
2Gb - for about 10 users. The only other applications in
use in the
Terminal sessions are MS Office.

The same VDF7 application runs fine at non-terminal server
sites.

I used to have an application do this. The problem was
that the program was crashing, but the system was
preventing the debug and crash message from appearing, so
the program just appeared to be "disappearing" from the
user's desktop. You might want to lookup some information
about turning Dr. Watson on in your terminal sessions.
However, the program may be crashing because it is looking
for files in the wrong place, which may be an indication
that the program isn't very terminal services friendly.
